Cool Sun Prem Thurs 01/09/11 from Bedford Park..

    PORTLAND 2 LEXTON ROVERS 1

Portland opened their 2011/12 season with a hard fought victory over newly promoted Lexton Rovers..

The season is only a week old and a a major worry has already croped up and thats the awfull condition of the pitch on Bedford Park..
Bumpy, hard as rock, clumps of grass and motorbike skid marks made it almost impossible to judge the bounce of the ball, hopefully the referee's report and a club complaint might just see some action taken to rectify the situation..

Goals from Brian Johnson and Darren Rimmer eventually secured the points after the visitors took a shock lead against the run of play..

Good performances from both centre backs Darren and Jimmy Rimmer kept the side in a tight game that was always going to go to the last whistle as newly promoted sides have a tendency to give it their all in the opening matches of a new season..

Josh Norgate was in fine form and collected the man of the match award with Jack Wilkinson,Mark Ryan, and Darren Rimmer also picking up a vote or two..

This Sunday the side travel to Abbey Lane Burscough for a game against Tony Jones's hard working Sterling Athletic who always pose a threat on home soil..

    Team Selection v Lexton Rovers...
    S.WILKINSON,J.WILKINSON,D.RIMMER,J.RIMMER,J.GREEN, C.ROBERTS,C.TAYLOR,M.RYAN,J.NORGATE,I.PARRY,B.JOHN SON.

Cool Sun Prem 04/09/11/ from Abbey Lane Buurscough...

    STERLING ATHLETIC 3 PORTLAND 7

An excellent first half performance put the visitors firmly in the driving seat with a five goal haul that could easily have been more..

A hat trick a peice for SIMON HILL and BRIAN JOHNSON along with a JOSH NORGATE strike saw Portland ease their way to three more points making six in total within four days...

Portland welcomed back GAV WHITE for his first game of the new season but with the squad now taking shape and a decent size the only place for him was a spot on the subs bench along with EOIN BOND and JOSH BRIERLEY...

A nasty head injury to keeper SAM WILKINSON midway through the second half seem to take the shine of what had been a great performance from the side as the home side rallied a little and notched a brace of goals...

Second half strikes though from HILL and JOHNSON kept the visitors on a second half level peging with the result never in doubt after giving their hosts a first half lesson in finishing....

    Cool Sunday Prem......Results...

    Portland 1 Herald 7

    Portland 3 Formby Dons 2

Portland have played 4 league games todate with a return of Won 3 and Lost 1..
Two weeks ago the club suffered a heavy 7-1 defeat at the hands of last years runners up Herald FC.
It would be fare to say that a footballing lesson was dished out by Ray Staffords side who bombed their way to a 5-0 half time lead and with it a very impressive showing that must surely put them as favourites for this years Title as they seem to be destroying any team that is put in front of them.....
Portlands consolation goal came from Simon Hill...

    Portland 3 Formby Dons 2

Last week was a must win game for the club if only just to get the morale back after a heavy defeat,a few words before hand in the dressing room seemed to do the trick as the team played well and took a two goal lead into the interval break thanks to two strikes from Craig Taylor..
Formby though fought back in the second half and drew level at 2-2,all the teams first half workrate and excellent play looked to be going down the pan untill a fortunate off-side decision went in Portlands favour allowing Gavin White to snatch the winner....

The club had no game today(25th) due to having a bye in the first round of the Liverpool Cup and no league fixture allocated.....next up MARSHSIDE HESKETH in the league at Rufford Road on Sun 2nd Oct..

Cool Sun Prem from Rufford Road...02/10/11

    MARSHSIDE HESKETH 2 PORTLAND 3

Its not often that you can say that after watching a Sunday morning football match that you'd have payed to watch it but this encounter certainly was one as both sides put on a great display of flowing attacking football..

Chances at both ends and a great penalty save from Portlands Wilkinson served up a great advert for local soccer...

Portland had raced into a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Ian Parry and a wonder strike on the volley from Mark Ryan before a spirited home side pegged the visitors back with an unfortunate own goal from Jimmy Rimmer and a snap shot from the edge of the area from Aaron Taylor...

With both sides going for the winner and Portland keeper Sam Wilkinson saving his third penalty of the season it was left to Craig Taylor to seal a well earned victory with a shot from the edge of the area that took a slight deflection of a defender to steer the ball past Hesketh's keeper.....

Some great individual performances helped the team to three valuable points but a special mention to Mark Ryan and Mark Johnson who were paired together in the centre of the park and worked themselves to the bone....

Well played and next up SHIP FC at Carr Lane on Sun 9th Oct..

    SHIP 6 PORTLAND 1

After last weeks impressive win at Marshside the team took on last seasons champions SHIP FC who have had an indifferent start to the season with only one win in five games...
It was certainly a case of after the lord mayors show as the home side, who were back to a full compliment of players after recent weeks, showed that they are not yet ready to relinquish their title to the inform Herald FC...

Portland were hit for six but will argue that the first two goals where "gifts" from referee Alan Swift who will look back on this game as one to forget...

Jack Wilkinson hit Portlands only goal of the game with a wonder strike that gave keeper Hawkes no chance with a bullet shot from just outside the area...

Wilkinson's strike came just at the right time and clawed his side back into the game, but no sooner had Portland given themselves a fighting chance with the 1-2 scoreline Ship were back into a two goal lead after hesitant play at the back gave yet another "gift" of a goal to the home side...

With Ship's bench a lot stronger than Portlands second half changes only gave Paul Favengers side more options to attack a weary looking visitors defence as pressure on Sam Wilkinsons goal continued and was thankfully saved from even more punishment with SHIP hitting the woodwork twice...

A bad day at the office and another stern test next week as Gareth Jones inform INTER GLOBAL side arrive at Bedford Park on the back of a run of six straight victories....

PORTLAND 1 INTER GLOBAL FC 1

After last weeks poor showing the lads bounced straight back with a great performance against high flying second placed Inter Global FC and after going a goal behind a superb second half display was rewarded with a fine MIKE COTGRAVE equalizer that earned his team mates a worthy point...

With three of the squad calling it a day and three more with work commitments every Sunday the loss of six players has took its toll, the squad is looking a little short in numbers but the commitment by the lads taking to the pitch can not be faulted with just two defeats in seven games....

Pick of the bunch today was SAM WILKINSON who kept his side in the game with at least three outstanding saves...

CHRIS ROBERTS will be sorely missed in the next few weeks,he put in a great showing on the right wing but work commitments will mean he now misses the next three games...

TIM HORN made his debut at centre back alongside DAZ RIMMER and looked in good shape and signs on at the club at the right time and will add to the numbers...

Inter Global arrived at Bedford Park on the back of six straight wins that has lifted them to the dizzy heights of second placed in the Sun Prem, but although Gareth Jones's side were missing two regulars he will be more than happy with a point after withstanding a lot of second half pressure from the home side..

Liverpool Junior Cup Rnd 2 23/10/11

    PORTLAND 4 HOLBANK 2

Two goals from BEN GLOVER helped us into the next round of the cup as the team ran out worthy winners against local Sun first division side Holbank, two more goals from MIKE COTGRAVE and IAN PARRY gave us a comfortable 4-2 victory that could have been more but for the woodwork that was struck no fewer than five times!

    Sun Prem 30/10/11

    FRESHFIELD 1 PORTLAND 2

Victory at the Ainsdale club lifted us into third spot in the league on 16 points and kept our decent form going having only lost twice all season in ten cup and league games..

Two new signings were on show in MARK WATSON and STEPHEN MADDOX and with the steady influx of players we are now establishing a decent squad although injuries and absentees still continue to frustrate the management who have yet to be in a position to name their strongest line up..

This game was pretty even at the break and after taking the lead with a SIMON HILL penalty hopes were high of adding more goals early on but when a mistake by DARRAN RIMMER allowed a home player a free run on goal the strikers shot flew past SAM WILKINSON and gave the home side an equalizer and share of the half time scoreline..

The second half was pure class from the visitors,JIMMY GREEN smashed a shot against the bar,IAN PARRY missed a sitter and CRAIG TAYLOR was denied a blatant penalty from referee John Hall who was unsighted as a defender took the legs from under him as he side stepped his marker in the box..

MARK"sparky" WATSON enjoyed a very impressive debut in the centre of midfield and the other debutant STEPHEN MADDOX got involved straight away after coming on for JACK WILKINSON in the 75th minute...

The winner came from a delightful pass from keeper WILKINSON who aimed a pin point free kick into CRAIG TAYLOR'S who dispatched a brilliant volley past a bewildered keeper...

    PORTLAND 2 WOODALE 1

Not the best ninety minutes we have played this season but nevertheless another three points that keeps us in third spot in the league with nineteen points..

There's not much between a bunch of the Prem sides this year that sit in the top half of the division and even sides like yesterdays opponents Woodale who are at the wrong end of the table will take points of sides on their day that will inevitably lift them into a respectable position in what is turning out to be a very competitive league...

Goals from IAN PARRY and BRIAN JOHNSON secured the victory and although the visitors rallied in the final ten minutes and scored it was not enough to alter the outcome of the game...

Keeper SAM WILKINSON made a couple of important saves and can be relied on week in week out to do his bit for the cause,IAN PARRY had one of better games for the club and JIMMY GREEN enjoyed a little more freedom as an attacking left sided midfielder instead of his normal position at left back, but it was CRAIG TAYLOR who not for the first time this season took the eye with a none stop attitude that gave Woodale problems all morning as he continually probed the defence with his silky skills....

A great three points and a mention to JACK WILKINSON who's last ditch superb tackle was vital as a player raced through on goal,it was well appreciated by his team mates who voted him man of the match.....

Next up,Crosby Sunday league side ARVATO FC in the Liverpool cup at Bedford Park on the 13th of November k.o. 11am...

Liverpool Junior Cup Rnd 3 from Bedford Park 13/11/11

PORTLAND 3 ARVATO 6 A.e.t.....3-3 after ninety mins...

No cup run this year as we crashed out in extra time to Crosby&District side ARVATO FC..

With only the bare eleven players it made it tough going from the off but the brave eleven made the visitors work hard for victory as tired legs eventually gave way in the extra time period..

At 1-3 down it looked all over, but a brave fight back made it all square at 3-3 and if lady luck had been with MARK RYAN we could have ran out winners in normal time if his two efforts on goal had not hit the crossbar and post...

JIMMY GREEN scored a cracker from 25 yards and rookie BEN GLOVER got on the scoresheet with his third goal in two games,Portlands other scorer with the equalizer that took the game into extra time was JACK WILKINSON...

Keeper SAM WILKINSON cryd off with a virus so JIMMY RIMMER took up the gloves and put in a brave performance and should take a lot of credit for deputizing in goal..

    PORTLAND 1 DUNES 1

Not the best we have played this season and grateful for a point in the end after the visitors took a second half lead and upped the anti in game with few chances..

First half opportunities fell to IAN PARRY and JOHNY LLOYD but they failed to deliver along with DAZ RIMMER who had a decent half chance inside the area..

Players unavailable for one reason or another continue to frustrate the management who at present are finding it difficult to select a side with three substitutes...

GAV WHITE returned to the side and scored Portlands only goal with a free kick that sailed into the opponents area and finished up in the back of the net without any player getting a touch on the ball......a tad fortunate maybe as we all thought that the referee had signaled an in direct free kick

No game now until next year??

    Its a possibility...

Our last run out was against Dunes FC on 20th Nov and with the bad weather causing postponements, and the Liverpool Cup taking priority,it means that unless a re arranged league fixture can be sorted for next Sunday we will be without a game until Jan 8th as both Christmas Day and New Years Day both fall on a Sunday...

The SGM meeting takes place tomorrow night (Mon 12th) and we will all find out if there will be district league soccer next season due to the exuberant pitch fees and utility costs that will have to be payed by all league clubs..

Some clubs may well go to the wall, ours included,as rents as much as £1200 have been quoted along with costs for grass cutting, pitch repairs, water rates and electricity that will all have to be payed for separately by clubs in the league for season 2012/13...

Let's see what happens at the meeting ,but it doesn't look good for local soccer..

    PORTLAND 1 STERLING ATHLETIC 2

Our first game in over seven weeks due to the bad weather and Christmas period and it showed as players dusted down the cobwebs in a flat first half performance..

The visitors arrived with several new signings on show and played some decent football and looked a shadow of the side that played months back at Abbey Lane when Portland put seven goals past them..

A brilliant early save from Sam Wilkinson kept Portland in the game and with the strong wind at their backs Sterling put the home side on the back foot and took the lead with a screamer from all of 25 yards that flew past a helpless Wilkinson..

Gav White should have done better with Portland's best chance of the half but failed to hit the target from the edge of the area..

Sterling went further in front with a goal from the edge of the area after a defender lost his marker from a corner kick and let the player flick home his shot..

Mark Ryan pushed further forward in the second half and put a glancing header into the path of Ian Thompson who just failed to latch on to the ball..

Portland played with more confidence in the second period and Mark Ryan was guilty of a clear miss at the foot of the post when he failed to connect from a corner kick..

Sterling had chances too and failed with two easy chances after shooting wide of the mark..

The last ten minutes was a case of all hands to the pumps for the visitors as the home side sent Darren Rimmer into attack and went for the equalizer in a 3-4-3 formation..

Referee Chris Billington, who is officiating in his first season, made what can only be called the worst blunder ever when he failed to see a blatant penalty claim.

With only minutes remaining Ian Parry was sent clear and raced into the area with only the keeper to beat,a heavy challenge from the keeper sent Parry flying and with the world and his dog screaming for a penalty the referee awarded no more than a goal kick that infuriated the home team and supporters...THE REF HAD MADE A HUGE BLUNDER and the look on his face after the game when Parry showed him the bruised and damaged leg told its own story...

Sun Prem from Portland Street 29/01/12.

    HERALD FC 2 PORTLAND 0

Top of the table Herald FC kept up their unbeaten run of all league and cup games this season but where made to fight all the way for three points against a spirited Portland side that are finding goals hard to come by of late..

With a decent squad selection available TOM HERALD was partnered alongside TIM HORN in the heart of the defence as the visitors looked to try and marshall the prolific strike partnership of Herald's MURPHY and FARRINGTON...

For an hour Portland held their own as both ROBERTS and THOMPSON tested keeper HAWKES but just after the hour mark a couple of quick breaks caught out the visitors and two smart finishes from MURPHY put payed to any chance of taking a point or more from a game that the side had all man for man, worked hard in...

Substitute IAN PARRY had a couple of half chances but Herald too could have added to their scoreline had a powerfull strike not hit the crossbar..

More signings have been acquired by the management to bolster the squad and its hoped that a few new faces may just bring that bit of luck that we need in front of goal..

A good game from both teams and one that we gave it our all,and with a run of fixtures now coming up that are all winnable the side will be looking to cement their position in the top four with a few more points on the table.....maybe easier said than done though because we need to find that magic touch in front of goal sooner rather than later...

Gav White scorer of two of Portlands goals....

Injuries to key players are making it a frustrating time of late but with three new signings on show Portland named a decent 14 as they took on the Dons at Duke Street..

The opening half was poor from the visitors with the home side edging things with a spirited and committed display..
Effort is all you ask of the players and although a 2-2 half time scoreline looked good on paper the early showing by some players paved the way for a half time rollicking and showdown from the management...

Formby took the lead with a poor defensive mistake and although Portland hit back to go 2-1 in front thanks to Gav White and Brian Johnson the side conceded again just before the break after a poor first touch from Jimmy Green allowed an easy opening for the striker to finish ..

The second period was a lot better but still the visitors had to rely upon the outstanding contribution from keeper Sam Wilkinson to keep them in it with three great saves..

Tim Horn and Gav White took the bull by the horns and guided the lads to a better second half performance and goals from Gav White and debutant Luke Beatham secured a successful return down the Formby Bypass with all three points in the bag...

Another debutant Jamie Paweleck worked hard up front and should have scored from close range before being substituted by Beatham...

Lloyd and Cotgrave came of the bench and played their part in the second half revival that should have produced more goals after ninety minutes...

Three more points that keeps Portland in third spot with a visit to basement side Lexton Rovers next up....

    LEXTON ROVERS 2 PORTLAND 1

Basement side Lexton Rovers with only one point and 13 goals to show after 14 matches should have been easy pickings for third placed Portland FC to take three points..........................wrong!....wasted oportunities in front of goal(in which there were plenty)cost them dear along with a lack lustre display and attitude from most of the side when they didn't have the ball..

Not even worth the time to make a report on so all that will be said is well played to the team that sits firmly at the foot of the table and with out making it sound like sour grapes must have thought christmas had come early...

Sun Prem from Smithy Green Formby 26/02/12..

    HARRINGTON 2 PORTLAND 5

After last weeks shambles losing 2-1 to bottom side Lexton Rovers changes were on the cards, but cry-offs made the team selection somewhat limited with some players getting a second chance to impress after last week...

Two players who were pencilled in from the off were the returning Chris Roberts and Craig Taylor who formed a formidable partnership up front with pace and power..

Roberts in particular had a blinding first half helping himself to a hat trick and with his strike partner Taylor back to full fitness the home defence suffered a horrid first half..

Tim Horn moved up into a midfield role from centre back and looked composed in the engine room and opened up Portlands account with a fine solo effort..

Four nil at the break looked like easy pickings for the second half but the lads had to thank keeper Sam Wilkinson and Jimmy Rimmer for the first half clean sheet after a great Wilkinson save from a thunderous Harrington effort and a brilliant last ditch tackle from t centre back Rimmer...

Portland being Portland stuttered in the second half and when the home side notched two quick goals it was game on although three wasted opportunities from Roberts,Ryan, and Breirley should have put the game out of reach..

Tempers could have got the better of some players as the game heated up,but referee Mike Aindow officiated well and was always at hand to defuse the situation...

Luke Beatham and Jamie Paweleck replaced Green and the tiring Roberts for the final minutes and a fifth goal was set up nicely by Beatham who sent Brierley clear down the right wing with a deft touch and as the ball came in Jamie Paweleck was on hand to tap home from close range...

With seven league games remaining the side are already five points better off than last year and looking to keep the momentum going next week at home to SHIP FC...

    PORTLAND 2 SHIP 6

Due to unforeseen circumstances your match reporter was absent today so not much to go on....probably best thing with a 2-6 scoreline
The lads were in it at 2-2 but folded in dramatic fashion buy all accounts in the second half..

An own goal and a Craig Taylor strike gave the home side some consolation..

    Time called on Portland FC....

Its sad,but the end of PORTLAND FC is upon us...

Formed some ten years ago the club has enjoyed success in winning league titles and cup competitions with the pinnacle reaching the LCFA Liverpool Intermediate Cup Final in 2006..

Due to player numbers dwindling away in recent years and the club duties being kept afloat by one person the time has come to call it a day so as to allow players and management to look for pastures new..

Maybe there's a silver lining in the clubs last season as we look to bring home some silverware in the shape of the Dennis Moorecroft Cup,last nights 6-1 victory against LEXTON ROVERS has given us a home tie in the Qtr Final against NAYLOR ENGINEERING so hopefully with a bit of luck we could make the semi final at least.....and then who knows!!

Thanks to all the players over the years that have graced the turf at "Beddy Park" but the time has come to call it a day,an end of season presentation will be held in early June so keep in touch with the PORTLAND FC page on facebook for more details...
