First Photo - it was a little later (at least the second year of school) because Julie Aindow was a year younger than us and is on the pic!

The front row is Marian Clarke, Linda Gaskell, Kitty Davies, Rita Mullen, Julie Aindow, Nicky Baines

Ashamed to say I cant remember anyone in the second row except Elizabeth Mills (2nd from left).

Third row:-John (Sears?), David Wilcox, Peter Higson, Michael, ?, ?, Eugene, ?, Christopher

    Top Row:-
Simon Ford (?), John (Manwaring perhaps) ?,?, David, Andrew, surname Grimes, David Molyneaux, ?,?
I was in the other class, but same year

2nd photo was Queen of the May celebration, Marie Furnival is the queen (on the steps, crowning the statue). Im in the picture but you cant see me behind Lindas cushion

I cant remember a Chris Hodgson - Patrick Hodgson was in our class but hes not in the photo - the only one I can remember is the blond lad in front of Father, who was called Vincent I think, the one in the middle was Bernard Bretherton who I remember was amazingly bright, and the boy on the end who might have been called Gerard!

I still have my school reports from Holy Family - even from the first year they showed your age and then announced your "mental" age and exactly what position you were in class... talk about pressure at an early age!

Grimpner... Im sure there is a thread somewhere on here about the dinner ladies and your nan!~

This one is even earlier but either the same thing (Queen of The May) or communion, probably around 1949-1950, my sister Irene is front row first left.

The photo below was probably taken at the same time as the original photo on this thread but shows the class higher. I'm guessing that they date from 1963.

The names I can recall are:
Back row L to R: John Furnival, Kenneth Pitman, Peter Hargreaves,Ronnie Jones, John O'Donnell, Joseph Baines, Chris Hodgson, Vincent "Paddy" O'Connor, Patrick Reynolds, John Burke, Brian Cummins & Peter Birch.
3rd row L to R:Barbara Miller, David Smolen, David Wright, Raymond Hilton, Philip Cunningham, Robbie Blundell, Jimmy Tresaden, Brendon Carroll, Billy Gibson, Michael Wallbank, Frankie Doyle & Margaret Lowe.
2nd row L to R: ?, ?, Christine Hargreaves, Linda Doyle, Joan Brady, Margaret Doyle, Sheila Ryan, ?, Ann McElvaney, Cathy Herald, ?
Front row L to R: Ann Murray, Carol Davies, Janet Buck, ?, Helen Stanestreet, ?, Marie Mullan, Maureen Kelly & Ruth Fenner.

The teacher was Mr Bond who I know remained at Holy Family for many years after.

I'm on this photo. I'm amazed that you can fill in so many names. I remember quite a few. Pete Hargreaves and Paddy O'Connor are dead.
Dave Smolen is a police inspector, John Furnival is a priest. Mick Walbank was my best mate, he lives in Manchester now. I remember a story on the front page of the Visiter some years ago, in which Bill Gibson's family reported his disappearance. I don't know what happened to him.

Ruth Fenna was my first love. When I was about 13 I went to a disco at the club, and she refused to dance with me. Life is cruel some times.

I think the girl next to Janet Buck is Cath Rimmer. Her sister is next to Sheila Ryan.

I'm on there as well but I'm not saying which one. I'm usually terrible with names so I amazed myself when the names came flooding back after all these years.

I know all about what happened to Bill Gibson but as far as I know he's still in the land of the living.

    rekab

Hi everyone associated with Holy Family school (or Dean Cook Memorial School to give it its proper title!!)
Well I am much too old to remember those pictures, mores the pity!!
I started in the infants with Miss Halliwell in 1935! and left in 1941 to go to the new Senior school in Grantham Road, Our Lady of Lourdes, in fact the first intake!! The teachers at Holy Family were, headmistress Miss Pearson (formidable!!) Miss Rimmer, one I cant remember Miss Maloney and of course the Parish Priest who supervised the building of the church was Father Richmond assisted by Father Mc donald.
One of my abiding memories was the way we celebrated Empire Day! everybody dressed up in fancy dress tryng to represent one of the overseas dominions! happy days!

I remember a lot of the kids on the latest pic - Was it a split class? I thought that Linda and Frankie Doyle were a couple of years older than me

Brendon Carroll posted on SB a couple of years - dont know if hes still around ( http://www.qlocal.co.uk/southport/pa...r%29-36615.htm )

Do you remember fundraising (I think during lent) to "buy" black babies? I think they cost about 2/6d each. Like to see them try that fundraising event in todays world!

Rekab - do you know when the school first opened?

Further to my thread earlier where I mentioned that I was at Holy Family from 1935 to 1941, well I have rememberd the teacher I left out, her name was Miss Sawyer!
My friends at infants and junior school were, Jimmy Dearden(a life long friend) Tommy Wakefield, Clifford Hunter, John Mccluskey, Tommy Wright, Brian Mccloughlan,Audrey Mizen, Anne O'Malley (who sadly died when we were in the infants) Michael Haney, Hugh Mccourt and Terry Foy amongst others, wonder if they will stir up any memories?
    Regards Mike

With regard to bluecomet's post, yes I think there are 2 classes on the photo which is why I think it's 1963. It would be the class that left Holy Family in the summer of that year, and the class below. I was in the latter and I left in 1964.

I do remember collecting for the "black babies". What was that all about!

As to when the school first opened, I understand that the original building opened in 1893 as a school and church combined. The school on the ground floor and the church on the first floor. So it was until 1912, when the present church was opened.

Harking back to the school's origins, while rooting through some family photos I found the picture below, which was taken outside the old school. It looks like a "First Communion" group dating back to Edwardian times. A great aunt of mine might be on it but I don't know which is her, and I'd be surprised if there's anyone else around now who can put names to those faces.

I've improved the levels on the photo if that's ok. Still a bit spooky though.

Why do people never admit to being just the right amount of whelmed?

Thanks for that guzzler, it looks a lot clearer now. Yes they do look "spooky" don't they, particularly the girls. Judging by the age of the thing, they'll all be ghosts now anyway.

    Talking rekab

    Hi "Bluecomet"
I dont know exactly when the school opened, I can only guess that it would be about 5 years after the church was concecrated and if you look at the front of the church there is an inscription giving the date I think! sorry cant more accurate than that, but I'll bet the current Parish Priest knows!!
