Cook's Riding Stables
Can anyone remember Cook's Riding Stables first it was down Zetland Street then it moved down Fyle Road in the 50/60's, not alot around there then just sand dunes. You just to see them all riding on the sands and all round town. My grandfather owned the sables, and when my father was a small boy the grooms from the sables used to take him to school on horse back everyday.

Cook's Riding Stables
If you would like to read about Cook's Riding Stables then get the book by local historian and author - Peter Dyer - entitled ' When I went a' Walking'. Its about his younger days in Southport but a lot about Mrs Cook. I think the Christian Bookshop in Wesley Street or Broadhursts, in Market Street, may still have copies it is a fairly recent publication.
Incidently Mrs Cook lived to be over a 100! My wife was the matron of a nursing home and Mrs Cook was a resident. She was a real feisty lady but liked the male carers!!
-
she lived to be 105 and yes she was a very fiesty lady. i just wish she had wrote a book of all her stories over the years it would of been very amusing. i will try and find the book you speak of, thanks for that. what was your wife called? i may remember her
-
The Nursing Home was Osborne House on Albert Road ( Now flats next to the Hotel). My wife was the matron , Jill Bridge.
When that home closed Mrs Cook went to one in Park Avenue where the matron was Caroline Jones who had been Assistant Matron at Osborne House.

Fort Cook Appreciated
Hi there! just a note to thank you for the kind comments on my book When I Went A,Walking.Glad you enjoyed the section devoted to Cook's Riding School. It has been a joy to read the memories people have expressed on that long gone institution through these pages.Especially, the evidence that the building still exists today.I hope to get my second small contribution to the town's history,on the famous DUKWs and the Shore Rangers, published in the not too distant future. Thanks again,be happy to sign it for you by the way! Cheers Pete Dyer.

Has anyone mentioned Thoms tea house Lord St, Drurys Noahs Ark, Welsbys,
Alenscotts, Macfisheries all in Chapel St.?
Mike
-
Well they were not all in Chapel Street.
Allenscotts was on Lord Street on the corner of Bold Street and possibly on the corner of Eastbank Square.
As you correctly say Thoms Teahouse was on Lord Stret (next to where the RBS is now).
The place opposite Rimmers shoeshop has "The Old Bakery" etched into its wall.

Winston House
I am surprised nobody has added Winston House to this list. It was a large Care Home on the corner of Albany Road/Promenade. It ceased trading on 25th November last year after many years. Apparently the building is condemned and unsafe.
See all, hear all, say nowt.
Let your fingers do the talking.

.
3 Jan 1968 at approx 10-30pm I woke up in Allenscotts doorway after being knocked off a Lambretta on Lord St/Bold St corner.
The Bakery opposite Rimmers Shoeshop on the corner of Hampton Rd/Forest Rd was funnily enough Rimmers when I was a little'un.

Does anyone remember the Hobby Shop on Bold Street? I used to buy magnesium ribbon from their which was fantastic to burn. They also sold Jetex engines.

I remember going with my grandad in the early 60's to a shop close to the junction of Liverpool Road / St Johns Road in Birkdale.
It was called Massam's and they sold Beer and Spirits to the public (Out Sales), this was in the days before Off Licenses were popular.
He would take his own glass bottle with a screw-in stopper with him, hand it to Harry Massam (Harry always wore blue Bib and Brace overalls) who would refill it direct from the wooden keg with Mild.
As I recall it was a small counter area, wooden floor boards with sawdust down, very dark and cold.

Used to spend hours looking in the window of the Hobby Shop... There was a similar type of outlet in Wayfarers Arcade just on the left after you had entered the mall.

Turner's Chippy !!!
Hard to believe nobody's mentioned Turner's Chippy in Tulketh Street ... How may chips would you like with your grease!!! I only ever had one portion of chips from there (for obvious reasons). The smells was enough!
I'm new to "Q" so will now attempt to attach some adverts of old businesses ... wish me luck ...
-
I'm sure there was another thread somewhere where peoplemwere waxing lyrical over Turners chippy. I'm with you though on this one Rodders, the place was always filthy and as you quite rightly said the smel was gut wrenching.
I once ordered steak pie and chips, the cold steak pie was then put in the fryer to heat up with the chips, absolutely disgusting.
Do you think that's really wise?
-
Thanks for the "cold pie in the hot fat" comment ... It's all coming back to me (almost a joke there!) ... It really was a horrible chippy and a horrible smell ... anyone know when they opened and (thankfully) closed???
Few business I haven't checked thoroughly for but, just in case ... Slinn's wallpaper/paint (Tulketh Street) / Tesco (Hoghton Street) then Cassidy's / MacFisheries (Chapel Street) / Lonsdale Universal (complete with haunted lift) / Roddy Doll's (Tulketh Street) / Bladon's the Printers (Princes Street) / Jimmy Fay's sports shop (Hoghton Street) ... Oooo I could prattle on for years ... got loads of photos to add on FB and Website and I'll have loads to answer threads too ... Why it's taken me so long to do this I'll never know!!!
As I'm a "newbie" ... I take it "Sgt Wilson" is the "boss" (moderator?) ??? Grrrr .... I've Soooooo much to catch up on - and so many new buttons to press :/
