My old mate, and fellow drummer (Diplomats) Kevin Finlayson had a very good quality second hand shop in Kensington Road, I think, on the corner of Windsor Road. He may still have it for all I know.

I remember the ships Chandlers that was on the corner of Hall St and Rigbys newsagents on the opposite corner

Kensington Road today
The only shops on Kensington Road now are a hairdresser's on the junction of Kensington Road and Windsor Road and a hairdressing supplier on the junction of Derby Road and Kensington Road. (there's also a light shop at St Lukes Road and the London pub if anyone wants to be pedantic)
The petrol station on the corner at Zetland Street is now a car wash/ second hand car dealer - better than either being left empty or turned into flats.
Kiddies shopfitter's are still going strong and are situated half way between Windsor Road and Zetland Street and continue to p*ss off all their neighbours by having their delivery lorries block their drives at all times during the day.

I used to work at AE Bevan on the corner of Hall Street and Kensington Road from 1972 and I remember Rigby's Newsagents on the opposite corner then later on there was a shop that sold sausage butties on the other side of Hall Street. It probably sold lots of other things but I only remember the sausage butties!
See all, hear all, say nowt.
Let your fingers do the talking.

As I get older and my mind dims I seem to recollect a drink concentrate company in Kensington Road. We were living in the chippy opposite the Talbot Hall at the time; I'm sure there was a company like this somewhere near there!
Growing old disgracefully.

Davenports Beer at home. There was a depot in Brighton Road Birkdale in the sixties. Probably elsewhere as well in Southport.
'Beer at home means Davenports
Thats the beer, lots of cheer
The finest malt with hops and yeast
Turns a snack into a feast
Straight from brewery, to your door
Why collect, we'll deliver
Soon you'll know why folks all say
beer at home means Davenports"
Why do people never admit to being just the right amount of whelmed?

my memories must be from around 1963-68.
Kensington road
I do remember going to the sweet shop on Hall street corner.
Did the end of that road towards the station used to be a brick wall or cul de sac?
In those days beyond the sweet shop was soot blackened dark scary place.
People closed their curtains after a death in the house.
Used to watch Jimmy Clitheroe on telivision on saturday.
Hide when the boxing was on!
My grandma bought egg custard pie for tea.Perhaps from the bakery mentioned.
Toast was made on a fork in front of the fire.
I am lucky to be alive as I was knocked down by a car in Kensington rd.
Spent 2 weeks on Princess Elizabeth ward at the old Southport infirmary.
Believe it was reported in the local newspaper. Not sure whether 1963 0r 64One day shall look that up!

In the late 1950's I used to walk home from St Phillips over the bridge. There used to be a small sweet shop on the left as you turned into kensington Road.

I have found an interesting photograph taken in 1964 in the garden of 59 Kensington Road.
The wording above the shop on the end of Hall street says Guinness and Stout. The middle line is too small to read.
Scanned and enlarged does not reveal any more detail.
Looks like there is a shop opposite at the end of Hall street too.

I've found this photo of Chadwick's grocery shop which was situated on the bridge at the corner of Kensington Road and Rose Hill. The girl in the photo is my aunt who used to work there. She was born in 1906 and looks to be about 18 in the photo, which would mean that it was taken in the early 1920s.
