HIGH-FLYING students from King George V College are heading for Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

Two of the world’s most sought-after universities have offered several places on prestigious courses including Classics, Anglo Saxon & Norse Studies and Engineering.

KGV student Dean Grierson, of Bootle, who is studying Physics, Maths and Further Maths A levels, has received an offer to read Engineering at Peterhouse College, Cambridge.

Dean achieved A’s in Chemistry, Maths and Physics AS levels last year at King George V College, and is currently also studying for an Extended Project Qualification into green energy solutions to transport problems, an area of specialist research at Cambridge.

Dean, a former student of St Michael’s C of E High School in Crosby, said: ‘The Cambridge interview process involved a lot hard work, but it was definitely worth the effort and I am hoping it will enable me to have greater career prospects in future.’

After university, Dean hopes to work in automotive engineering, developing electrical engineering in the automobile industry.

Former Greenbank High School student Jessica Taggart has always dreamed of studying Anglo Saxon, Norse & Celtic Studies, and has received an offer to study that course at Cambridge University.

Currently studying A levels in Ancient History, Classical Civilisation and English Literature at KGV in addition to Latin GCSE, Jessica notched up A’s in Classical Civilisation and Ancient History AS levels last summer.

Jessica, of Hillside, Southport, said: ‘My parents are very happy for me. This course is unique to Cambridge and I have always wanted to do this degree. I would like to do a PhD or possibly go on to become a historian or a curator.’

Jessica’s advice to any aspiring Oxbridge entrants is to plan as much as possible.

She said: ‘The interview was a long and arduous process, but the support at KGV was fantastic. I received one-to-one tuition and practice interviews from my classics tutor, Julia Clayton, which really trained me for the interview process for Cambridge. I would advise anyone interested in going to Oxford or Cambridge to make sure they plan ahead.’

KGV has a long-established tradition of successful entry into Oxford and Cambridge Universities.

Last summer, two KGV students gained entry to Medicine at Cambridge – one of the world’s most renowned destinations for that subject. In addition, KGV’s best-ever A level results in 2016 propelled five other students into Oxbridge for courses ranging from Biology to French and Law.

An impressive total of 19 students from KGV are currently studying at Oxford or Cambridge Universities, or have received offers to do so.

KGV is also currently celebrating national success due to being at the top of the Department for Education and Skills’ national league table for practical and applied learning courses.
