Sign the petition to save our Park facilities.

Following on from a meeting held 15/01/2012. Attendees, Smythe, tougholdbird, ex more, swampeyes and brewyn. We have agreed a plan of action against the council closing the Aviary, Fernery and Nursery Shop at Botanic Gardens and the Conservatory at Hesketh Park.

An online petition was part of this plan and is here for you to sign. Please do this, it only takes a minute. Other paper petitions will be in circulation soon around the parks and local businesses. We need to get as many signatures before the end of February. Every one of you can make a difference so please take the time to voice your opinion.

We feel if we do not take action the facilities will be closed and inevitably the parks will follow. It's a slow phasing out of the attractions, the plan is to close the parks down bit by bit until nobody visits them any more and the council will be able to justify full closure. The writing is on the wall.

This is why we need to take action now. Give the council a firm message that this is not acceptable. Make a stand people of Southport! Your parks need you!

After BBC Question Time were nothing will change concerning the national issues raised, I hope people in Southport show the same interest in their own town and sign up to protect our parks. We must show our local politicians that we care about our town.

We have the football leagues complaining about the increase of rent for the pitches etc. Why doesn't Sefton suggest they take over the running of these pitches etc themselves?

You take no notice of the page that asks for a donation. By the time you get to that your vote is already registered so you just log off!

absolutely agree that these facilities should all be saved with the exception of the avairy, haven't been to either of these parks for quite some time (don't really agree that a place where children play should be invaded by my two mad hounds)! but when we did go the avairies always looked neglected.

  17. swampeyes says:05/02/2012 09:21 PM
They don't look neglected to me. I know for a fact that the birds and other animals there are cared for to a good standard. Cleaned and fed, and plenty of attention. They also bring alot of pleasure to many, adults and children alike.

Is this person looking at Hesketh Park which I would agree with but The Aviary at Botanic gardens is looked after exceptionally well, I know the staff who work and look after these birds and they put 100% work in. A lot more than the council do trying to close everywhere,Save our Aviary ,

  20. pedoja says:06/02/2012 08:45 PM
There is no longer an Aviary in Hesketh Park.

  21. PINKSPANNER says:07/02/2012 07:03 AM
some people needto read others comments properly before they reply, i did say that it had been some time since i had been to the park (my daughter now being 15) so i am glad to hear that the birds now seem to be being looked after properly.

"Some people" should phrase what they say more carefully, especially when they clearly don't have the relevant information.

  23. whistleblower says:07/02/2012 05:19 PM
The only people not looking after anything are Sefton Council, they have expensive to produce tourist publicity books stating we have fantastic parks, award winning floral displays,7 miles of golden beaches,Aviary,Fernery etc.
They should be fined under the trades description act.

All very well saving this and saving that but where is the extra money coming from?,certainly not from the likes of the average Joe in the street,it does not grow on trees.
To re-allocate finance it will have to come out of another pot,so where is that "other pot" old folks homes or what?.
The local govt workers threatening strikes over pensions, where is that money coming from .We all hate the local govt rates that are forced on us ,but it will mean bigger increases year on year. Sorry, but I would like to keep my money in my pocket.

Possibly from some kind of 'pruning' of layers of Managers managers and above.

Reduce the councillors from 3 to 1 per ward get rid of the 21 councillor Southport Area Committee because it cant stick up for Southport, and lets have a publicly elected executive Mayor of Southport.
The waste of money Fairways and Kew Park and Rides should be sold.
The cuts are worse than they should be because Sefton already had a massive shortfall of about about £20m to make up before the government revenue support grant cuts.
