I've seen these particular trips advertised in the Visiter and thought what a great day out...

I will definitely be going on this day out. I heard that the loco would be a Jubilee. Either will be great.

Hamble make sure he is not on line when you run it by him.

    Very clean and shiny.
Mr Hamble and his father went on a Russian train trip in the 1990's.
There was a strict no photo out of train window rule.

We've been on a lot of these fabulous steam train trips crossing the forth bridge to Dundee in the north and windsor in the south. crossing ribblehead viaduct was good, you if you could get a space you could stick you head out of a window and see the engine puffin away, they were all day trips. I think a company called st james organised them. Happy days

I know a couple of the Drivers from West Coast Trains who work the specials and the one I spoke to the other day thought it was a Black 5. Although the advert has a picture of the Jubilee "Leander" it is currently stripped down having boiler work done.

Did any of you watch that programme where folk go out to different countries and do the job there that they do in England.

One was a London bus driver who went to the Philippines, driving a "Jeepney" in Manila.

On Sunday (I think) it was a train driver who went to Venezuela and had to drive a freight train up the Andes/ get it loaded with ore (of some kind) and drive it down again without burning out the brakes.

    Was very interesting.
I may be old but I ain't stupid..!!!

I didn't see it but I believe he was a Virgin West Coast driver from my old Depot in Manchester. As for driving freight trains compared to Pendolino's it is as different as going from flying concorde to to riding a trike.

However, you're right, it was a very interesting series

Bit miffed it's in midweek as I'd love to have a go on that!
Does anyone know when it's due in? Eg, the night before so's I can pop down and have a look. Or, is it coming in and going same morning?

I didn't see the programme from the beginning and obviously wasn't listening that intently!... However it was a good programme and that downhill run looked scary with all the twists and turns and steep gradients and 'drops'. Plus having to reverse to allow another train to go UP the mountain.

I think it will be dragged in by diesel loco on the day and dragged out again on it's return.

Just rang up to book and only 100 spaces left, so hurry if you want to go on this day out as it is likely to be sold out by next week!

I'm going with a good friend of mine

Sincerely hope it's not dragged on it's journey. Will be ace looking for it from work as it travels over the Moss to Wigan etc. Thanks Beau, I kinda reckon it will too- too much risk firing it up on way in when it has a paying run to do.

I think you misunderstood The Diesel will drag the train into Southport probably with the steam loco on the back and then at Southport the diesel will be uncoupled and the steamer take the train to York and back. On return the diesel will hook on again and drag the train and loco back out. The special will be worked BOTH ways by steam.

Unfortunately the WHOLE train cannot be turned at Southport hence the need to drag it in and drag it out afterwards.

Ahh, I get you- thanks. I was thinking originally that the steamer could "run round" somewhere outside the station

We have booked.... so I hope the Steam train doesn't suffer a problem... it just won't be the same being diesel hauled!

Probably a darn sight more reliable than the diesel...

I'm actually already getting excited about it

Will you be taking your camera with you for some shoots to share with us on here?

The last time I went on a steam train was as a child in Llangollen, going on one from Southport sounds like it's a once in a lifetime opportunity unless of course any future trips are planned

I was talking to the Driver this morning who is working the steam loco to York he said that the 10 carriages and the steam engine are being dragged into Southport. The diesel will be detatched and remain at Southport to drag it back out on return from York. He is going to send me the workings so as soon as I know the loco I will post it for those interested.

Is it not a little expensive; not much more to go for a day out on the Orient Express and I know which one I'd prefer.
Although I did enjoy a steam train journey on the Isle of Man once.
