Bits in movies that scared you as a child

First one I remember was Ghostbusters 1984. The bit in the movie that terrified me was the ghost in the library. Laughable now when you look at special effects these days. Most recent that scared me was the Grudge! Poltergiest still scares me.

    Jaws

The bit in jaws when the head pops out of the sunken ships porthole freaked me out when i saw jaws as a kid, we had fish and chips on the way home and later that night i had a nightmare about crabs (from the sea) crawling and biting my legs in bed.

Carry on Screaming - when Kenneth Williams had to keep plugging himself into the 'leccy socket cos he faded away. Also dipping of women into wax to make models.

Opening 'sequence' and music of Tales of The Unexpected

both above still scare me witless and I bet I bloody dream about them tonight now too. Nice one Steph

The bit in the 70s Armchair Thriller 'Quiet as a Nun' where the protagonist comes up through the trapdoor in the deserted tower and sees the faceless nun in the rocking chair.

That's it. Nightmares for me tonight.

never seen chitty chitty bang bang and by the sounds of it highly unlikely to now or ever

as an aside my friend used to tell me that when the coal man came round with his sacks of coal back of the wagon, they were actually full of naughty girls and boys. never looked/thought about coal in a different light since then.

Hi hun if you are reading this and thanks again for ^^^^

Old hat now of course, but I'll bet the shower scene from Psycho induced some damp underwear at the time.

I had many sleepless nights at one point recalling that dreadful scene in 'The Lighthouse Keeper '( I think it's called) involving the Robot and a woman in a nicely sewn blouse. I can't remember her name be she turned up many years later in an episode of The Sweeney playing a woman from Hull.

Top tip- If you are ever in a Lighthouse with a robot coming up the stairs, a portable clothes horse should not be your first weapon of choice.

I never saw anything in the movies that really disturbed me as a kid...The thing that really did was the original Quatermass and the Pit.... I literally pooed myself when the ground under the guy who'd been working on the thing in the pit started mooving by itself!

The Lethargians in The Phantom Tollbooth gave me nightmares when I was a kid. What a flippin' freaky film that was.

Oh no! That terrible film I saw whilst babysitting. The one where the baby sitter keeps getting phone calls. Turns out its from within the house. I nearly died watching that.

Massively underrated film. There are some seriously scary things in it, including the vibrating tarmac you recall. Sadly let down by the awful giant rubber grasshoppers from Mars.

I didn't realise people wore underwear in the shower.

I'll have to hunt that down,if only to appreciate the nice sewing.

I wonder if performing in a horror film prepared her for playing a native of Hull.

Why do you think she took the name Sister Atilla?

As was the remake.....The " Martians " still looked like 1930's theatre props!

I DO remember another short film, part of a television series created by ( coincidently ) Nigel Kneal ( Quatermass's creator ) which involved a young couple, a remote cottage in Scotland and an Urn that was walled up by the fireplace...The episode was called Baby and there was one scene of an old haggard witch sitting in a chair suckling some nightmare creature from hell that disturbed my nights sleep for several months afterward..

Are you trying to needle me? Don't pin your hopes on success.

Oops: I've just cottoned on to your meaning.

A propos the other posts on the site re people's interest in ferroequinology, you must have a few good yarns if you want to start a new thread.
