    nice pics

i'm not exactly sure but WRJ Video in southport may be able to help you .....i think they may have old cinefilm footage of the underground street i also think they may have more pictures from research done when they were producing the HISTORY OF SOUTHPORT video, A guy called Geoff Wright did a lot of the research and i know for sure he has old southport photo's, which i assume Lower Neville Street will be included among them...........

Good luck and continue the search

    Regards Cjay

yes the video is still available...... and it is a real southport video done by real southport people. (not outsiders) you can contact Billy @ WRJ Video on 01704 506000. there is also a video of Botanic Gardens & Churchtown......... and another of The Flower Show with old black and white footage from the 50's(quite a few southport blokes putting up the grand marquee).....

I've got a little white dish with the words

    "Mrs Moor
    8 Neville St
    Southport"

printed on it. Can't take a pic at the mo (I've lent my camera out for a couple of days) but I'm trying to find some info on what/who it is? I wondered if it's from a pharmacy or something like that? Does anybody have any ideas?

    Nevill Street Subway.

As can be seen from the photos the subway led from the beach up to Nevill Street. It was filled in, in 1903.
At the same time the 3 entrance buildings were erected at the pier entrance, in front of the Casino. They survived until 1969.
I think it was also at that time (1903) that the Queen Victoria statue was moved to Nevill Street from the Municipal Gardens.
I don't know how much of the lower level of the shops survive.
    Philip.

    Correction.
The Queen Victoria statue was moved to Nevill Street in 1912.
It was the work of Sir George Frampton and was unveiled in 1904 outside the Atkinson Art Gallery.

Nevill Street is spelt that way because of a mistake.
It was named after somebody called Neville who built the first house there. Neville Buildings at 11 Nevill Street was built on the exact site. When the street came to be named, the "e" was left out. (Source: "Southport, A Century Ago", by Geoff Wright).

This picture shows part of the subway from the Promenade, in 1863.

    Philip.

It was only quite recently I noticed the missing 'e'. Wonder why they didn't just correct the mistake, given that it was meant to be named after Mr Neville?

At long last the mystery regarding the spelling of Nevill Street has been answered! I've wondered about its' spelling for years, particularly as Neville Buildings is spelled with an 'e'. Thanks Philip!!

  14. doe's anyone know if they are going to put back the large lamp standard that used to be on the island behind Vic'ys statue, it was put up for the Queens coronation in 1953 together with a matching one at Lord st Eastbank st junction

    Underground Shops in Southport

I heard people talking recently about the old underground shopping arcade in Southport that has been closed since the turn of the 20th century. Apparently this arcade used to start at Neville Street. I have tried local libraries and the internet but cannot find any information. Was just wondering if anyone had any information or could point me in the right direction.

    Many Thanks
