Thread: Southport Pier

    Southport Pier

I knew it as the second longest pier in the UK I remember a Fire that closed it for a while. When it reopened there was a bar at the end of it and a new Railway. A guy called Bert Turner drove the train. Bert prior to this had 'piloted' the Launch around the Marine Lake. I remember too fishing off the end of it and watching the Shrimp Carts.

Not a lot of people know that!!

The song Underneath the Arches was written about Southport Pier by Flannagan and Allen when they were appearing at the Casino Theatre (the Pier Theatre)

This was the home of Southport Rep for many years and the Billy Scott Coomber Show.

The King Brothers made their debut there when they hit number one with Wake up little Susie.

The smiles are for good times while I working there as we also met most of the stars from the Garrick.

    Lodging

My grandmother had a Boarding House and often accommodated the Acts appearing at the Garrick.

    I remember too BJC.

My uncle Jack Nickeas from Fir Street worked as a barman at the end of the pier. When my Mum made a trip home she had a bunch of my relatives wandering around under the pier collecting shells for me. I had told her before she went on the trip the only thing I wanted her to bring me were shells from Southport.
By the time I was able to make a trip "home" the pier was closed.

    Abenis,

Peter Mc Bride lives just down the Road from me, I used to play badminton with Neil at Meols Cop Youth Club.

Does anyone remember the Happy Harry smashing against the Pier?

    Harry

Peter lives in Kent now. We were best mates upto national Service. Pete went in the navy and signed for 9 years then had a long spell in the Prison Service.

Yea I recall that ship crashing into the Pier what is most remarkable is how it got over the famous sandbank which is about 800 yards from end of pier

My bet is we know each other
