Bye
Bye Sefton
As he stated at the last General Election John Pugh will be
stepping down as a Sefton Councillor. He was first
elected in 1987 for Birkdale and has been re-elected four
times since then topping poll in the all up elections in
2000. He took over in in 1992 as Liberal Democrat leader
after the Lib Dems worst local election results in living
memory. Since then the party has grown from being the
smallest on Sefton to being the biggest with John becoming the
council leader in 2000.
"The
council has been a big part of my life - stressful at times,
rewarding at others - but never dull. Trying to live
with the hopelessly biased government grant and funding
systems means that financing services was always a great
problem.
I
will relish the independence now to criticise the council when
it makes mistakes and praise it when it does well. Many M.P.'s
stay on the council because it provides them with a lot of
important information but I think a clear break is the right
thing for me now.
My
chief regret is that the Liberal Democrats have not sercured
overall control of Sefton. My chief source of pride is
that we managed to keep education spending up in good years
and bad, and didn't duck tough decisions".
