Images in the Forum ~ Help Pages ~ Basic

Moving your mouse over words in bold red text in these tutorials will bring up a brief explanation of the term, which some of our "new to computers" members will
find useful.

We are regularly asked how to do various things with images in the forums. Some of these are already
covered in our FAQ page accessible via this button
(Frequently Asked Questions) which is at the top of every page in the forum; others require a bit more detail.

Hopefully these pages will explain the basics but we cannot cover every single image-editing application

that is on the market. All these applications have Help files which should be your first port of call to find out how to do what we mention in these pages. If, after reading this and checking your own software Help files, you still cannot fathom out how to do what you want, then please go back to the forum and ask your question, stating which Image Editing software you are using, and hopefully someone will be able to give you exact instructions. Some common Image Editors are covered here.

Basic Image Information

For our purposes, there are two kinds of image - photographic and "drawings"; the former has millions of colours and shades whereas the latter has blocks of solid colour or well defined lines.

Photographic

"Drawings"

Photographic images for the forum should always be saved in .jpg (sometimes referred to as .jpeg) format, and "drawings" should generally be in .gif format. Never save a photograph as a .gif - not only do you lose a lot of quality, but due to the way data is stored as a .gif, the file size will be massive!

Unless you are fairly experienced (and if you were, then you wouldn't be seeking help here!) then as far as you're concerned, any animated image is also a .gif.

Where Do I Get Images From?

You can find images on the web, you can scan them in from paper copy or you can take them from a digital camera. Remember that unless you have created the image yourself, it may well be copyrighted; however, there are literally millions of places on the web to get free stuff.

Another thing to bear in mind if you are using a picture found on the Internet is that it is not polite to link to an image on someone else's webspace without their agreement. Technically it is considered to be "bandwidth theft".

So, when you find an image that you can use, then in the first place you should save it to your own hard drive. One way to do this is to right click on the image and select "Save Picture As" from the menu that appears (if you've never done this before, try it on one of the images on this page) and save it to a folder on your own hard drive (and remember where you put it!). Bear in mind though, that the web designer may have disabled right-click as a simple security measure to make it harder to get the picture - if he has, then you shouldn't really be trying to get that image!

Another source of pictures which can be very useful, particularly if you are trying to get help with a problem on your computer or to explain something as I will be doing in these tutorials are screenshots.
