The Hoghton
Players G & S Society is the only G & S society in Southport,
Formby and West Lancs. It was formed in 1952 as a church
society based at the old Baptist Church down Hoghton Street,
Southport. The aim was to produce some sort of outlet for the
young people in the church to enable them to discover more
about their skills and talents, whether it be singing, drama,
dancing, scene painting, costume design etc. Over 50 years on,
a handful of the original members are still involved to a
greater or lesser extent in the Society. |

Southport
Bach Choir
www.southportbachchoir.org.uk
The
Southport Bach Society was founded in late 1965 by David
Bowman, the then organist at Holy Trinity, Southport and now
known to A-level music students as the author of various music
textbooks. His original intention was to have a small chamber
choir, rather like The Sixteen, with only a few voices per
part, but over the years the choir has grown to around forty.
After
5 years David Bowman moved to Ampleforth and he was succeeded
at Holy Trinity by David Williams, then the Director of Music
at K.G.V, who also took over the Society.
Over
his more than twenty-five years of direction the choir has
grown considerably in size and repertoire,
which is mainly religious in nature and covers a wide variety
of periods and styles - from Bach's "Mass In B
Minor" to motets by Twentieth Century British and
continental composers. We have performed works from the 15th
century to the present day. Most concerts take place in Holy
Trinity itself but occasionally we perform secular works
in the Parish Centre at Holy Trinity or at other venues around
Sefton.
There
are three main concerts in a season and normally at least one
of them uses a professional orchestra and soloists. The
orchestra is usually a mixture of students from the Royal
Northern College of Music, who are just starting on their
professional career, and experienced players from the
north-west's established orchestras. |

Kew Woods Primary School
www.kewwoods.co.uk Why not visit this excellent and informative website for Kew Woods Primary School?
Kew Woods Primary School is a one and a half form entry school for pupils aged 3-11. We serve the Kew estate and surrounding areas but in practice many of our pupils travel some distance to get to our school.
The school is set in magnificent grounds which we continually develop for outdoor learning and play. This year, our playground and sports zone have been improved with new markings to encourage a wider range of activities.
The five key outcomes of ‘Every Child Matters' is at the heart of our work. This is reflected in our mission statement, leadership structure and in everything we do. We really believe that every child matters.
Visitors to Kew Woods invariably comment on how impressed they are with our pupils who are confident, articulate and independent. We nurture our pupil's self-esteem - for we believe when children feel good about themselves they can reach their highest level of personal success. The key to success is by both congratulating and rewarding pupils for their attainments and by giving positive feedback on how they can improve further. Our 'Celebration Assemblies' and ‘End of Year Award Ceremony' play an important role in reinforcing our school's vision and values.
As well as achieving high academic standards the pupils at Kew Woods enjoy a broad and much enriched curriculum. As well as the national curriculum subjects, Key Stage 1 and 2 enjoy a performing arts lesson each week, our key stage 2 pupils learn French. Our extra curricular programme is a key feature of our school.

The North Meols Civic Society
www.northmeols.merseyside.org
The North Meols Civic Society is one of over 1,000 civic
societies throughout the country. Our area of interest is
the historic parish of North Meols, covering the northern
part of Southport - Churchtown, Crossens and Marshside.
We
are always seeking new ideas and ways of promoting the
heritage and interests of the area. We are pleased to hear
from anyone that wants to get involved - there is always
plenty of work for those with a real interest.
From
September to June we have monthly meetings. Our speakers
deal with subjects of local and national interest. Past
topics have included lacemaking, crime prevention, local
history and the Southport Flower Show.
We have
good relationships with local traders and many local groups.
We often arrange joint meetings with members of other
organisations for the mutual exchange of ideas and
information. |

Ainsdale Civic Society
www.ainsdalecivicsociety.com
Although a relative newcomer to the community scene, our
group has been fortunate enough to have achieved a number of
outcomes for the area. We formed the Society in November
2000 because a group of us thought there was a need in
Ainsdale for a coherent (and collective) voice to represent
issues within our community. Ainsdale Civic Society has
grown significantly since November 2000 and we currently
have 150 members. We meet on the last Wednesday of each month
at Sacred Heart Church Hall, Liverpool Road, Ainsdale at 8pm. We provide
a variety of interesting speakers and all are welcome to
attend. |

North Meols
Family History Society
www.nmfhssouthport.co.uk
The
Parish of North Meols (which included Churchtown, Crossens,
Marshside and Banks) traces its history back to pre-conquest
days. Known then as Otegrimeles, it was held by Saxon Lords
until the Norman Conquest. The lands around North Meols were
then passed on to William De Coudrey, and consisted of a
narrow strip of arable land, with sea to the North and West,
and Martin Mere to the East.
The son of
William De Coudrey, Robert, built Meols Hall, the first
Manor House in the Parish. The area was isolated and very
slow developing. The cluster of cottages around the Church
became known as Churchtown. Churchtown village was for many
centuries the most populated area in North Meols. However in
the latter years of the eighteenth century, sea-bathing grew
in popularity.
William
Sutton known as “The Old Duke” opened the first original
“Dukes Folly Hotel” and in the nineteenth century there grew
a new town. In just over one hundred years of careful
planning, developed a most attractive seaside and
residential resort situated in the North of England.
Visitors today who take the short journey from Southport to
Churchtown, find a charming village with its thatched
cottages, St. Cuthbert’s Church, and the beautiful Botanic
Gardens a delight to visit. |

The
Official Mini Mad Merseyside Site
www.mini-mad.fsnet.co.uk
In
1989 I saw lots of adverts for the Mini 30 Birthday party at
Silverstone. (There was no 'Miniworld magazine' back then, so
no way of Mini owners to get in touch with each other besides
the National Mini Owners Club). As Silverstone seemed so far
away I thought it would be great if I could get together with
other local owners and we could travel down together. I drew
up a flier and put it on any Minis I saw and also put a small
article in the Echo. On the Saturday I went to the meeting
point (Woodwards Formby) 16 Minis turned up!! We traveled in
convoy and stopped at a campsite where hundreds of Mini owners
had set up camp. The show was great, 100,000 people !!! and it
got me thinking… What about a local club?? I sent out some
fliers and very soon had my first members, Mini Mad Merseyside
was born. |
