2001
- In Merseyside and
Lancashire,
Patient Grants totalling £513,098
were made to 1,502 local people.
Behind
each grant lies an individual story of anxiety and financial need:
The
Patient Grants Team received a Christmas card from a cancer clinic which
sums up how patient grants make a real difference: "I
would just like to say thank you for all the help you have given me,
towards making my patients lives more comfortable or easier through the
grants they have received. I wish you could see their faces and relief
when a problem is eased, or a worrying bill paid, and the heating can be
turned up or on again."
Across
the country just under £5 million in grants was given to help over 16,000
people “living with cancer”.

New
Chemotherapy Centre opened in Halton, Merseyside, on 23 July, and largely
funded by an appeal in that area. This unit, as with all Macmillan units,
is designed to provide a high quality, supportive environment which
reflects an atmosphere of calm and safety for cancer patients.

Macmillan's
first Pharmacist has been appointed who is based in Macclesfield. This is
a new and innovative post. Julie will make sure that patients get the pain
relief drugs etc they need, in conjunction with their cancer treatment,
working between hospitals and hospices.
