If you enjoy a good glass of wine, you must pay a visit to the new hip Village Wine Bar in Birkdale Village.  This stylish new bar opened just before Christmas 2001, but is already attracting lots of locals.

Owner Robert Cook, himself a Birkdale resident, opened the bar specifically to serve the immediate area - "for people who don't want to go into Southport".  But, thanks to its warm and friendly atmosphere, good choice of food, and superb selection of wines, it is likely to attract visitors from further afield as well.

In fact, inside, the bar would be more suited to a city setting.  Divided into two rooms, part of the wine bar features imposing high ceilings, while the adjoining room has very much a wine cellar feel to it and looks wonderfully atmospheric with its curved ceiling.  There is also a superb Bang & Olufsen sound system.

Throughout the decor is different shades of cream and includes 160-year old pitch pine flooring reclaimed from an old church.  Contemporary paintings by local artist Malcolm Fryer are displayed on the walls. 

• The Village Wine Bar is the fact stocks about 70 different wines ranging in price from £9.95 a bottle right up to £140.

• Champagnes are available from £12.50 (half bottle) to £125, and there's an impressive guest wine list which changes all the time.

• The bar also has a small selection of spirits, beers, and cocktails.

If you feel a bit peckish, you'll be pleased to know that the Village Wine Bar also offers food.

The menu, which is constantly updated, includes Sandwiches, Baguettes, Jacket Potatoes, Boeuf Bourgignon, Spaghetti Bolognese and a selection of traditional Spanish Tapas.

Food is prepared by the special chef, Gianfranco Bonsignore, who hails from Nice.  Food is available both day and night.
